Volunteers building a better Santa Paula, one citrus season at a time
The Santa Paula Citrus Festival isn't put on by some corporate event company. It's organized entirely by the Kiwanis Club of Santa Paula — a group of local volunteers who've been doing this since 1987. No paid staff running the show. Nah — just neighbors. No big sponsorship machine pulling the strings. Just neighbors who care about their town enough to spend months planning a three-day party every summer.

Kiwanis International is a global service organization focused on kids and communities. The Santa Paula chapter takes that mission seriously. Every dollar raised at the Citrus Festival goes directly to local youth causes. That's the whole point of the festival, when you get right down to it.
So here's a question people sometimes wonder about — OK, they charge five bucks at the gate, vendors pay for booth space, ride tickets sell all weekend. Where does it all end up?

One year — I think it was around 2015 or 2016 — the festival helped support fourteen different nonprofit organizations. Fourteen. From a three-day festival in a small town. That's pretty remarkable when you think about it.
The volunteers themselves don't take a cut. They handle everything from setting up tents and managing parking to running the information booth and breaking everything down Sunday night. Some of these folks have been doing it for twenty years. They just show up every July like clockwork.
Want to help out? The Kiwanis Club is always looking for extra hands. You don't have to be a Kiwanis member — community volunteers are welcome and genuinely appreciated. Typical volunteer roles cover parking management, ticket booths, setup and teardown, and shuttle coordination.

The festival wouldn't exist without its volunteers. Period. When someone shows up at 6 AM Saturday to help set up vendor booths in the July heat, knowing they won't get paid a dime — that tells you something about this community.
The first Santa Paula Citrus Festival took place in 1987. Santa Paula was already well-known as the "Citrus Capital of the World" thanks to Limoneira Company and the dozens of smaller groves scattered across the valley. The Kiwanis Club saw an opportunity — throw a festival that celebrates what makes this town special, and use the proceeds to invest in its future.
In the early years, the festival was modest. A few food booths, some local bands, maybe a bounce house for kids. But it caught on. By the mid-2000s, attendance had grown enough to add carnival rides, a proper car show, and headline entertainment acts. The festival even expanded from two days to three.
Through all the growth, one thing hasn't changed: it's still the Kiwanis Club volunteers running everything. No outside management company. No corporate takeover. Just the same group of locals who started it, plus some newer faces who joined along the way.
Here's something most visitors never think about. That carnival you walk into Friday evening? Somebody started setting it up on Wednesday. And the info tent, the parking lot signs, the shuttle coordination, the stage rigging — all of that is volunteer labor.
Thursday night is usually the final walkthrough. The organizing committee checks every vendor booth location, every power hookup, every safety barrier. There's always one thing that goes wrong — a generator that won't start, a sign that blew over, a permit issue that needs a last-minute phone call. It happens every year. They fix it every year.
By Friday at 4 PM, the volunteers are already tired. But then the gates open, people start streaming in, and the music kicks off, and suddenly it doesn't matter. That's what keeps them coming back — watching a park full of happy families eating corn dogs and riding the Ferris wheel, knowing they made it happen.
Sunday night after closing is the real test, though. Teardown. Everything that took three days to build has to come down in a few hours. Folding tables, pulling stakes, sweeping the grounds. The last volunteers usually don't leave until well after midnight. And some of them will be back at their day jobs Monday morning. Nobody talks about that part, but maybe they should.
You can't talk about the festival without mentioning Limoneira. The company has been a major sponsor and supporter since the beginning. Founded in 1893, Limoneira operates one of the oldest and largest citrus ranches in California, right here in Santa Paula. Their groves produce lemons, avocados, and other citrus fruits that ship across the country.
The festival's connection to Limoneira isn't just about sponsorship money. It's about the story — Santa Paula exists as a community partly because the citrus industry built it. The packing houses, the railroad, the downtown architecture, the schools — citrus money funded all of it. The festival keeps that story alive for younger generations who might never set foot in an actual grove.
The Kiwanis have shaped more than just the festival. Their fundraising helped restore the California Oil Museum and supported trail maintenance at Punch Bowls. Many members are Limoneira employees or airport hangar owners — this is a small town where everyone wears three hats.
